Pol Pot – leader of the Democratic Kampuchea

Khmer Rouge rule started from the year 1975 and lasted until 1979. The four year period of Khmer Rouge made some serious impact on the minds of the Cambodian people and also made a unforgettable mark in the Cambodian history. Khmer Rouge rule was led by Saloth Sar. He was recognized and usually known as Pol Pot. He took post as Democratic Kampuchea’s Prime Minister and also he was the Cambodian Communist movements leader. Khmer Rouge was the name given to the Cambodia Communist Movement.

Pol Pot’s different ruling technique

Pol Pot obtained his post in the mid 1975. He wanted agrarian collectivization version to be imposed on the people of Cambodia. His policy was to make the dweller of the city to move to countryside and they have to work with the farmers in farms. Most of them were forced to work in forced labor projects. Restarting civilization was his prime motive. Because of this activity of Pol Pot, thousands and millions of people died, as they cannot tolerate slave labor. In addition to this slave labor, malnutrition and lack of medicine also results in thousands of deaths in Cambodia. Lack of precautious activities led many diseases to spread in Cambodia, which too resulted in thousands of deaths. Some people even died because of malaria, which could have been cured under good treatment. About 21% of the entire population of Cambodia died because of all these activities. 21% of people may come around 2 to 2.5 million people. This number is very huge and because of this huge number of killings and deaths, the Khmer Rouge was considered as genocide.

Personal profile of Saloth Sar [Pol Pot]

Saloth Sar was born on may 19, 1928 in the Kampong Thom Province in French Indochina. Saloth Sar was on the lagging side of studies and he failed consecutively for three years in the same exams. After this, he left studies and started to identify the rebelling groups in Cambodia. Later he came to know all about politics and he learnt all techniques required in politics. Later in an aim to achieve power, he started to involve in some unwanted activities. The Pol Pot owned the guerrilla forces of the communist and this guerrilla war force was put in power officially by the government. Later he succeeded the Khier Samphan and became the prime minister. He took his power on may 13, 1976.

His torture rule of Khmer Rouge ended with the Cambodian – Vietnamese war in 1979. After the victory, Vietnamese took power and ruled the country with is base from Thailand. Pol Pot after losing his power ran to forest for his survival. He stayed in the western Jungles of Cambodia. The Cambodian government ruled smoothly after his defeat. In 1996, a peace agreement was signed after which Pol Pot announced the decline of the Khmer Rouge organization. Finally, Pol Pot was kept under house arrest and he died in 1998. Many rumors prevailed regarding to the death of Pol Pot.
